You know you're a knitter when...

... you can identify the pattern of your co-worker's handknit sweater.

When I saw my co-worker, I said "Did you make [the sweater]? Is it the Sunrise Jacket?". She looked at me funny and told me her mom made it... from a pattern she found in a magazine. She then said, "I guess you a hardcore knitter then, eh?". I think she might be slightly scared. It doesn't help that I'd seen the pattern 2 weeks ago.

On a different subject, I'm gearing up for Sock Wars III. I just started my swatch tonight. Yes, I'm swatching. Those who know me know I don't swatch and would rather start a project over than to swatch. But this time, there's approximately $1400 worth of yarn riding on this swatch since a wrong gauge will disqualify you. Yes, that's right, $1400 worth of yarn. SWTC is giving the winner $500 in yarn PLUS 60 balls of Tofutsies if they use Tofutsies as their "weapon" of choice. That's a lot of yarn.

Realistically, I don't think I have too much of a chance of winning due to the fact that I work full time. I hope that I can finish at least 1 pair of socks before I'm killed. The fact that my feet are 10.5 might keep me alive longer since my socks will be a couple inches longer than someone with size 5 feet. We shall see...

Missed opportunity

So today I went to a friend's b-day dinner out in the west end. Had Schezwan food at a place on W. 10th Ave. When I left the restaurant, the Fuzzball (a.k.a. the bf) smiled at me and gestured to the right of him. 2 stores down was Urban Yarns. I can't believe I missed the store completely as I went into the restaurant. Le sigh. I guess it was a good thing that the store closed at 5:30pm so there wasn't another chance for me to cheat on my 'yarn diet'.

What is this 'yarn diet' that I'm talking about? Well, it's a self-imposed restriction of buying yarn for the rest of this year (with the exception of emergency project yarn and vacation yarn). After the little 'yarn accident' at a fave LYS (local yarn store) during their belated boxing day sale, I realized I have more yarn in my stash than I have time to knit. While one never discloses the actual size of their stash, I can say that I have enough yarn to last me for quite some time. Thus, the self-imposed yarn diet so that I could reduce some of my stash weight.

Unfortunately, a trip to the same LYS with the sole purpose of buying a ball winder resulted in me cheating on my yarn diet. Going into a yarn store (with yummy yarns and sales) unsupervised is very dangerous, especially since I haven't fed my yarn stash for over 3 months. The damage wasn't too bad, nothing my credit card couldn't handle. Now before I get the whole "tsk tsk" from those who read this blog, I will say this: It was 50% off and it was 100% silk and 100% cotton. At least it's not more sock yarn.

I hope that there will be no more moments of weakness during the rest of the year. I'll be going to the Victoria Fibre Festival / Knit Out this year with my friend Jay and I'll be putting a budget as to much I can spend on yarn at this festival. I know I won't be able to resist the variety of hand-dyed, hand-spun, artisan yarns so instead of splurging, I'll be limiting myself to a budget. So with that and vacation yarn (yarn that is bought while out of town), I think I'll be good for the rest of the year.

First post!

Ahhh... the first post of a new blog....

Still gonna be working out the details of this blog for the next week or so but this will be my knitting/craft/life blog with a focus on knitting.

I've been trying to come up with a name for this blog for the past month or so... my other ideas were already registered by other knitters (surprise surprise). This blog name came from a brainstorm for my "Nom de Guerre" in Sock Wars III. Apparently the names "Li'l Polar Bear" or "Crumples McFluffy" didn't seem that they would strike fear in the other knitters. So if you're looking for me in Sock Wars III, I'll be going by the alias "Lady Sheepsbane".

Hopefully, I'll be able to keep a good track record of all my knitting and maybe help out or inspire some other knitter.
